Where do you want to go?

There is a very high demand for ESL teachers across the globe, but you’ll need to have a good think about where you want to travel to. China’s teaching English as a foreign language market is rapidly expanding and there are incredible opportunities available for fresh graduates and experienced teachers.

Am I qualified?

To teach abroad you will need to obtain the correct visa. This will dictate the qualifications required for the position. For example, in China, Hong Kong and Macau candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and 100-120-hour tefl certificate. The industry standard is a 120-hour tefl certification.

Do your research!

Once you have decided where you want to go, make sure you research the requirements. Be wary of companies saying they will employ you when you do not meet the visa requirements or that they will obtain your visa once you are there. This is risky! Go with a company that follows the correct protocol for visa processing. Even though this may mean a longer application process and a later start date, it will ensure your safety once you have arrived in your new destination!

Working hours

It is common practice in ESL positions in learning centers to not work 9-5 Monday to Friday hours. Be prepared to work a different schedule!

Stick to deadlines

Your recruiter will set deadlines for all your documents to be collated so that they can process your visa. Stick to the dates as it means you will be able to start your adventure on time!
